Introduction: The Joy of Graded English Reading
Reading short, realistic stories is one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to improve your English vocabulary, grammar intuition, and reading comprehension. When you read graded stories designed for the CEFR A1 and A2 elementary levels, you do not need to look up every single word in a dictionary. Instead, you encounter natural sentence structures that reinforce common patterns such as the present simple tense, everyday phrasal verbs, and descriptive adjectives.
In this story, you will follow a regular morning in the life of Thomas, a dedicated baker in a quiet village. Read the story once from start to finish without pausing. Then, review the vocabulary table and complete the comprehension check at the end to solidify your learning.
Part 1: The Alarm at 4:00 AM
The alarm clock rings quietly on the wooden bedside table. The digital clock displays 04:00. Outside the window, the sky is completely black, and the village of Silverdale is peaceful and silent. Thomas opens his eyes, stretches his arms, and smiles. While most people are sleeping under warm blankets, Thomas's favorite part of the day is just beginning.
Thomas is forty-five years old. He has been a baker for more than twenty years. His grandfather was a baker, and his mother taught him how to select the finest golden flour. He stands up quietly, washes his face with cold water to wake up, and puts on his clean white baker's apron. He walks down the wooden staircase that connects his apartment directly to the bakery kitchen below.
When he enters the kitchen, the room is cool. His first duty is always the same: he turns on the large stone oven. The oven takes forty-five minutes to reach two hundred and thirty degrees Celsius. While the brick oven warms up, Thomas begins preparing the ingredients for the morning bread.

Part 2: Flour, Water, and Patience
On the heavy oak table in the center of the kitchen, Thomas weighs three large sacks of organic wheat flour. He adds fresh mineral water, a pinch of sea salt, and his natural sourdough starter. This starter is special: Thomas has kept it alive for over twelve years by feeding it fresh flour and water every evening.
He mixes the dough with his strong hands. Kneading bread requires patience and rhythmic movement. You must push the dough forward, fold it in half, turn it ninety degrees, and push again. Thomas hums a soft melody while he works. After twenty minutes of continuous kneading, the surface of the dough becomes smooth, elastic, and warm.
He covers the dough with clean linen cloths and lets it rest. "Good bread cannot be rushed," his grandfather always said. While the first batch rises, Thomas shapes small buttery croissants, cinnamon buns, and long French baguettes. By 05:30 AM, the kitchen is filled with the warm, buttery aroma of roasted grains and caramelized sugar.
Part 3: The First Customers of the Day
At 06:30 AM, the first rays of sunlight paint the village roofs in soft shades of orange and pink. Thomas unlocks the front door of the bakery and flips the wooden sign from CLOSED to OPEN. The bell above the door jingles cheerfully.
The first person to enter is Mrs. Higgins, an energetic retired teacher who walks her golden retriever every morning at dawn. "Good morning, Thomas!" she says with a bright smile. "The whole street smells wonderful today. May I please have one seeded sourdough loaf and two cinnamon swirls?"
"Good morning, Mrs. Higgins," Thomas replies warmly. "Here is a loaf that came out of the oven only ten minutes ago. Be careful, the crust is still delightfully warm!"
A few moments later, seven-year-old Leo runs into the shop holding his father's hand on their way to elementary school. Leo's eyes widen when he sees the chocolate brioche rolls in the glass display case. Moments like these remind Thomas why he loves his craft: bread is not simply food; it brings comfort and community to everyone in town.
